Many of us who celebrate Mother’s Day are wondering how this year’s holiday will unfold. Foregoing the usual family get-togethers or outings can leave us feeling at a loss of what to do. Here are some simple, classic ideas with a social distance twist:

When we find ourselves in the darkest days of the year, many of us can find it challenging to harness the hope of the new year. It’s cold and gray and also dark outside, and our spirits can feel a bit dim, too. Many of us, when we think about the idea of “hope” think of a glimmering light, some possibility of good things happening in the future. It can seem like a hard to pin down emotion, slipping through our fingers— here one day, gone the next. When we’re suffering from depression, loneliness, pain, boredom, or just feel like we’re in a funk, what can we do to feel hopeful?

It doesn't matter how old you are; Christmas time often brings out the kid in all of us. Seniors are no different. While the holidays are not about money or gifts, it's rewarding to see other people's faces light up with joy when they open a gift they love. Just a short time ago, it was incredibly rare to find someone who was part of the “Centenarian Club” or even close to it. But with advances in medicine as well as senior care, people are now living longer. Centenarian’s Day, held this year on September 22^nd, began as a way to honor people who have lived, laughed and endured all the way to 100!

Save the date for August 21st and make plans to celebrate National Senior Citizen’s Day! Back in 1988, Ronald Reagan officiated this day as a way to honor and recognize our nation’s seniors. Since then, this day has been deemed an official way to recognize this generation’s lifetime of achievements, sacrifices, and contributions they have made to their communities, families, and country. Although every day is a reason to acknowledge the seniors in your lives, think ahead and do something special on August 21st to go above and beyond for these special individuals.
