Fieldstone Memory Care Olympia

Mike Lyons | Up-and-Coming Spotlight

Fieldstone Memory Care Olympia will be opening later this summer and we're excited to introduce one of our future residents, Monica, and her husband, Mike.

Married for 47 years, Mike and Monica have been inseparable from the very beginning. Each day, Mike takes Monica out after her morning breakfast at home. The number one reason Mike tells us he married his wife? “She was always smarter than I was!” Mike and Monica owned an outfitters store, and both have been very physically fit throughout their lives.

Even though Monica is now dealing with dementia, Mike works to ensure that her needs are met in so many ways. His passion for Monica’s care is incredibly inspiring! Mike has even learned Monica’s schedule - when she gets her hair done and where, when and where her nails are done, and even who her favorite person is to do them. He even went back to the hair salon and asked them how to do her hair so he could keep up with it in between her appointments!

Another way that Mike shows support is by continually searching for new information regarding dementia. He asks a lot of excellent questions, attends conferences about dementia, and is always looking to gather more information. Despite the difficult circumstances of helping a spouse with this disease, Mike still maintains his sense of humor.

Mike is very loving and attentive, as so many of our families are. However, we understand the toll that caregiving can take on loved ones. Fieldstone Memory Care Olympia is eager to be able to assist Mike full-time and have Monica be constantly surrounded by staff and activities, such as her exercise program that Mike works hard to keep her on top of. Plus, her hair and nail appointments can all be taken care of onsite in our memory care community.

Once Monica is moved into our community, we hope Mike’s worries will start to diminish, knowing she is well cared for daily. In the meantime, we support Mike and Monica as best as we can with constant communications, as well as having our nurse available for discussions and additional information.
