5 Ways for Seniors to Age Happily (and Healthily!)

It’s uncharted territory for all of us, and unlike that time when you were really excited to turn 18 or 21, birthdays aren’t always so fun. Your back may hurt, you don’t remember where you left your keys and your metabolism just isn’t what it used to be.

Happiness isn’t a guarantee, and many seniors experience depression as they age. In fact, it’s estimated that 7 million people in the U.S. over the age of 65 suffer from depression. The good news is that simple changes in lifestyle can make huge leaps in a person’s state of mind. So how can seniors age happily?

1. Socialize

It’s important to make time to spend with friends or loved ones and remain social. Don’t be afraid to ask for a ride from your friend who may be more mobile, look into a car service or even a safe means of public transportation. Similarly, schedule something weekly. While scheduling social time isn’t exactly spontaneous, it’s a great way to make sure you take the time to do it. Create a standing appointment with friends to go out to dinner or Happy Hour. Events like “Taco Tuesday” happen at most Mexican restaurants (obviously every Tuesday) and involve margaritas. A delicious and fun activity!

2. Find Humor

Laughter is the best medicine, seriously. Studies have shown that laughing is therapeutic and has healing characteristics that can rival the effects of exercise. A pioneer in laughter research, William Fry, claims that it takes 10 minutes on a rowing machine for his heart rate to reach the level it would after just one minute of hearty laughter. While life isn’t always funny or enjoyable, a positive attitude, surrounding yourself with people who make you laugh and seeking out hilarious videos can go along way in improving your mood

3. Exercise

It’s a catch 22; when we aren’t active even the littlest bit of activity can leave us feeling exhausted and drained of energy. Exercise, however, is a proven way to improve moods, lower rates of depression and help with aging.  Endorphins are chemicals released by our bodies when we are active that trigger a positive feeling and leave people feeling euphoric.  Seniors should try and commit to 30 minutes of low impact, physical activity, three times a week. Check into local gyms that may offer senior classes like water aerobics, walking clubs or even yoga!

4. Eat Well

For some, cooking can be quite the chore. It’s easier to reach for that frozen dinner, box of cookies or order something in, regardless if it’s the healthiest option or not. You’ve probably heard “You are what you eat” and that rings true. Eating wholesome foods that stabilize blood sugar like leafy vegetables, turkey, yogurt and blueberries are all great options to help aging and keep you feeling great. A new trend that is going national is health food delivery options. Try searching online for “healthy food delivery” and your location to see options in your area… And in other words, eat that Mexican food and margaritas in moderation.

5. Find Support

The bottom line is: you cannot manage aging all on your own. Everyone will need help eventually and it’s more than okay to ask for help to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Your options range from receiving help from loved ones to home care, or to checking out independent living or assisted living communities.
