Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia are increasing worldwide. In fact, every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops the disease. Because the number of people living with dementia are growing at a rapid pace, the need for specialized care has also increased.
Though memory care communities can vary drastically, most provide a secure environment with specialized care tailored to seniors living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Here are some of the innovative features in Fieldstone Memory Care communities:
A Town Square
The centerpiece of Fieldstone Memory Care is the Town Square. It is reminiscent of a quintessential small-town square, complete with 50’s diner, movie theatre, art studio, serenity room and salon. Because dementia often steals more recent memories, it is important that people living with dementia be continually reminded of places and memories associated with earlier life. At Fieldstone, the Town Square gives residents the opportunity to take a trip to town while staying in a secure and stress-free environment.
An Easy to Navigate Design
Fieldstone Memory Care buildings are designed to be easily navigable for residents. A symptom of dementia is wandering, and it is not uncommon for individuals to lose their orientation which can lead to unnecessary stress. To help mitigate this, living areas are designed with wide hallways (20 ft. versus the standard 5 ft.) and great room layouts, resulting in ample activity space and clear line of sight - residents can easily ascertain where they are and where they would like to go. All resident rooms are also visible from a nurses’ station, so a friendly face is nearby when assistance is needed.
Calming Environment
One of the side effects of Alzheimer's Disease and other forms of dementia is agitation and anxiety. People living with these conditions can become upset when confused or overstimulated. Because of this, Fieldstone Memory Care communities are designed to provide a calm environment. Throughout the day, residents have access to a beautiful outdoor courtyard, where they can walk, relax, or even garden. Each community also includes a serenity room that provides a place for residents to relax and enjoy calming music, aromatherapy, and low lighting.
Fieldstone Memory Care has received several industry accolades recognizing their commitment to creating communities that promote resident safety, health, and happiness. Most recently, they received the 2017 Herman L. Dawson award which is given to senior living providers who use technology and design innovation to drive business operations and resident safety. In 2015, Fieldstone Memory Care was also recognized by the Alzheimer’s Association as a premier community partner –which is awarded to senior living communities that show a commitment to community, memory care, and their local Alzheimer’s Association chapter.
